Meep Pic Of The Week: Mermaids (1990)

Mermaids (1990)
From Orion Pictures (RIP)
Original Theatrical Release Date: December 14, 1990
Available on DVD and currently available on Netflix Instant.

Mermaids is an excellent, underrated coming of age film with fun dialogue:

Charlotte joins Joe on an early morning fishing trip.

Charlotte:

So Joe, tell me about the nuns in the convent. Do they wear underwear in the shower?

(voiceover)

I don't believe I said that.

Charlotte (cont'd):

I'm always too embarrassed to take a shower after gym. Mary O'brien, she dances around naked screaming about her boyfriend's quivering loins.

(voiceover)

Shut up, Charlotte. Shut. Up.

Joe:

The boat's down there.

Charlotte (voiceover)

Please god, let him throw me on the ground and make another Joey jr.

(Charlotte trips, but Joe catches her, and she nearly bites lustfully into his leather jacket)

Joe:

You okay?

Charlotte:

Yeah I'm fine, thanks.

Charlotte (voiceover)

I do want to be good, and virtuous, but, it isn't easy.

Joe:

Come on.

(Charlotte quivers as Joe picks her up and puts her into the boat)

Joe:

Do you want to bait your own hook, or do you want me to do it?

Charlotte (voiceover):

Mary Mother of God, he still wants to fish?

Apparently Orion offered a blow up doll of Cher as a promo for Mermaids!

Winona Ryder was on a roll in the late 80's/early 90's: Beetlejuice (1988), Heathers (1989), Great Balls Of Fire (1989), Mermaids (1990), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and the underrated & quirky Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (also 1990)...  All good Films, greatly aided by Winona's presence and charm. Hers is a comeback I'm still hoping for. We still love you, Winona!
