10 Movies / Car Chases

My 10 Favorite Movies Featuring some pretty kick-ass Car Chases...

The Seven-Ups (1973)
My absolute Favorite Car Chase on Film.

The French Connection (1971)
The Classic gritty car chase. I really love this one.
Piece 'o New York City Trivia: The chase underneath the elevated subway has a stretch that serves as the same location where Tony Manero strutted his way into our hearts during the opening credits intro to Saturday Night Fever (1977).

Bullitt (1968)
Bullitt has long been considered to have the best car chases on Film. It's also the Movie that put the Car Chase as we know it on the map. Still great after all these years.

The Driver (1978)
A Clear inspiration for Last Year's amazing Drive. The Driver has 3 really great car chases. Here is the Film's first:

Jade (1995)
Would you think I was lying if I told you that Jade, one of the most reviled Movies of the 90's, has one of the best car chases ever captured on Film? Well, It does. An unbelievable one that doesn't pull any punches. Jade is also one of the most unjustly trashed Movies of the 90's as well.

Duel (1971)
The terrifying Car Chase. Spielberg's Duel is the perfect pot boiler; and a clear template for the great Jaws

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)
Friedkin's stylish mid-80's Actioner is as rough and tough like the best of them. To Live And Die In L.A. has some really memorable chases. One of my absolute Favorite Action Films of the 80's.

Night of the Juggler (1980)
They don't make 'em like this anymore. The kinds of chases and stunts found in the non-stop thrills of Night Of The Juggler cannot be duplicated these days. The gritty streets of 1980 New York City will never be the same (at least until 1995 with my number 10 Pick). No DVD of this one, sadly. But, don't let that be an excuse. It's a must see.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)
The quintessential 70's Grindhouse Chase Movie. Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is a lot of irresponsible fun. Which is the best kind.

Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995)
I don't know how they got away with this. Die Hard With A Vengeance's cab ride through Manhattan is kind of insane, and thankfully devoid of the modern-day use of CGI. So unlike Len (Lame) Wiseman's next installment in the series. While that Film didn't suck, there's an emptiness there. Action works best when the danger seems as real as possible. When it's a cartoon, it's just a cartoon.

Future Filmmakers, watch scenes like these and take note.

I also have much love for the chases in:

Against All OddsBeverly Hills CopThe CarDeath ProofDeath Race 2000DriveGone in 60 Seconds ('74)The HiddenThe Italian Job ('69)RoninThunder RoadThe Town and Vanishing Point

I completely agree with you about Jade. A solid film maligned for reasons I've never quite understood.
