New York Horror Movies List

Growing up in the gritty New York City of the late 70's and 80's could be considered by some to be horrifying in itself. For me, it helped form an appreciation for many things, including the Horror Film. The New York City of my youth was full of Movie Theaters, some of which were Movie Palaces, a lot of others were pretty run down and with no signs or repair on the horizon. But they were dirt cheap! It's in these theaters where I met my first love, The Movies. A love affair still growing strong after all these years.

Because a lot of these theaters were by their nature considered "seedy", I got to see all sorts of strange, offbeat Films, always avoiding the plethora of Porn and badly dubbed Chop Socky at my disposal. Porn because I was way too young, and Chop Socky because it somehow bored me. Although I still very much loved all the Mainstream films of the time (which I'm sure I'll get to in future posts), I tended to gravitate towards those of the more visceral variety. The Horror Film especially. I was lucky enough to watch a lot of movies that probably didn't get a lot of play outside of the Drive-In's in this country. I still greatly remember sitting in the theater watching Basket Case with both a wide smile on my face and my hands sometimes covering it in fear. To quote my Favorite Horror Film, Halloween, "...Everyone's Entitled To One Good Scare". I wanted a few more. And I got 'em.Thank you, New York!

Here's my way of celebrating the New York Horror Film. A visual list of everything that was either filmed in or set in the boroughs, upstate, the islands and all the nooks in between. Enjoy!

Oh my gosh, WOW. How long did this post take you??!!

This is all the more amazing because I am actually going on a trip to NYC next week to visit a friend and of course do some marathon sightseeing. We plan on going to the Ghostbusters firehouse, which was the only big movie location I could think of!

Wowzers, dude, applause, applause! Thats quite the collection of posters you got there man!

I have never seen but always wanted to: The Rejuvenator and Robert Englund's Phantom of the OPera.

The Driller Killer, it doesnt get anymore 70's New York than that! So grimmy!

I recently reviewed four of these: The Sentinel, Lucio Fulci's Manhattan Baby, Dante Tomaselli's Horror and the awesomeness that is Lady in White, I really loved that one.

Thank you for all the kind words, guys. It was a fun list to put together.

What a great post. That New York of the 70s and 80s that I grew up with in all the movies I remember was the kind of thing that was a character unto itself, and it's cool to get your perspective on it as someone who grew up there.

Amazing! Great list! There's nothing better then New York in the '70's and '80's. Love seeing films listed that like Fear No Evil and Lady In White which both filmed partly in Rochester, not there that far from where I live.

Thanks again!

As his novel "American Psycho" arrives in stores and death threats are delivered suggesting he should be dismembered like the victims of the book's fictional killer, Bret Easton Ellis seems dismayed that his work has sparked the biggest literary brouhaha since Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses." ginecologo consulta medico pediatra medico doctor dermatologo veterinario veterinario ask to consulta abogado abogado abogado abogado abogado psicologo doctor psicologo abogado abogado "I had no idea the novel would provoke the reception it's gotten, and I still don't quite get it," he said last week in his first interview since Simon & Schuster abruptly canceled the book's publication three months ago and it was resold to Vintage. You write for yourself; you work out between you and your pen the things that intrigue you."
