31 Days Of 80's Movie Slashers: 10/18 - The Initiation (1984)

Day Eighteen:

The Initiation
From New World Pictures
Original Theatrical Release Date: December 1984
DVD: Yes

Plot: Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga) is pledging a sorority. Part of her pledge requires her to be locked up in a office building/shopping center with some friends and fellow pledges. Memories of a murder in her childhood keep haunting her, and now a killer is stalking her and her friends!

The Initiation is the kind of Slasher film that takes a few viewings to really appreciate. It moves a bit slow at times but the payoff is great.

Produced by New World Pictures, Initiation is a rather late entry in the slasher sweepstakes. It should go down as the last Slasher to be released in the genre's golden era of 1978 to 1984. And it's not a bad way to go out.

Daphne Zuniga makes for a spunky protagonist. The Initiation is credited as her first Feature Film, but that title actually belongs to her brief appearance in The Dorm That Dripped Blood from 1982. I suppose getting unceremoniously run over by a car isn't the best credit to start with, is it? As the lead, Zuniga does a good job here. Even if she spends most of her time questioning her sanity and looking into mirrors suspiciously and with great fear. I mean, as we get older, who doesn't?!

The Picture has some fun, engaging characters, a romance or two (including the teenage equivalent with the occasional humping) and it's partially set in what's basically a mall. Who doesn't love a movie set in a mall?

Three's Company!

... And it's even classed up with performances by Clu Gulager and Psycho's own Vera Miles!

Adults wear ascots and drink wine. That's just how it's done.

I myself prefer the magic and wonder that is Joy Jones in this movie. Her glasses and attitude are killer! The movie needs more of Heidi.

There's a good amount of zaniness to be found in The Initiation. Other than the cheese factor (which this movie clearly has a chunk of) I love me some zaniness...

The kills and gore are handled pretty well in the film. And the Movie also has a decent amount of suspense (when it isn't bogged down in backstory flashbacks). Though the focus here is not so much about the gore as it is about unravelling it's mystery...

...And I really love a good Scooby-Doo Mystery. This one has one and even a doozy of an ending. Oh, and there's a live band performance. An 80's Slasher must.

One of my favorite scenes in a Slasher. It has sent chills up my spine.

After a trip to the mall to buy some Roller Skates, short-shorts and hair rollers, see The Initiation with the members of your family that you're sure of.

For some reason I hated this movie when I saw it. I thought it was boring, and the great Vera Miles was wasted in a nothing role. Oh well, at least Heidi was delightful. I wish the movie was all about her!

That said, I should probably give it another try.
